What is Low Laser Therapy?

Low-Level Laser Light is one of the most effective therapies to treat hair loss. Currently, over-the-counter laser therapy devices for hair growth are available through convenient hands-free systems, or less convenient hand-held devices. Either product may be used at home, and does not require the supervision of a physician.

Lasers are widely used in medicine and also throughout a variety of  industries, in a multitude of varying capacities. The laser energy used to stimulate hair growth is visible in the red light spectrum. The laser light used in promoting hair growth is defined as Low-Level Laser Therapy  (LLLT).

LLLT is sometimes included under a broader definition of ‘Phototherapy’ called Low-Level Light Therapy, where the light-emitting device may be a laser and/or light-emitting diode (LED).

Light from a laser in a specific wavelength has an effect on your body when it is applied for a sufficient length of time. It is theorized that when the laser light is absorbed by target tissue molecules, the energy level of the molecules is increased and the molecules respond by ‘working off’ the excess energy with adaptive changes. These changes may be chemical or physical, and they may have biological effects on the target tissue or surrounding tissues.

Because the changes in the molecules are brought about by phototherapy, chemical changes are said to be due to ‘photochemistry’ and physical changes to ‘photophysics.’ As a result, the biological effects on tissue are called photobiomodulation.

Does Laser Therapy Works for male Pattern Baldness?

There are many hypotheses, which address how LLLT photobiomodulation may stimulate new hair growth. It is hypothesized that LLLT initiates the chemical reaction in the cells that make up the follicle’s epithelial matrix causing the proliferative activity.

Much evidence points out that follicular apoptosis (programmed cell death) is reversed via the application of laser energy. Observations of wavelength stimulation of optimal hair growth, has shown precisely what wavelengths, power, and intensity are necessary for optimal effect in stimulating new hair growth. It is important to note that heat is not associated with the photochemical and photo therapeutic effects of LLLT. LLLT is a low wattage ‘cold light’ laser, and while there are visible red wavelengths, there is no sensation on the skin of persons undergoing treatment. Cold lasers are safe and universally accepted as such by medical authorities, worldwide. Also significant is the fact that there are no side-effects associated with the use of LLLT, as there are with usage of pharmaceuticals, topicals and pills.

The vast majority of physicians and medical experts agree that LLLT can be effective in growing hair in those with male pattern hair loss. Experts have also observed and noted that the overall health and condition of hair may be improved in a LLLT treated area.

Who may Benefit from LLLT?

Medical experts who specialize in treating hair loss agree that treatment should be based on the correct diagnosis of its cause. Hair loss physicians and medical experts agree that LLLT is a highly viable option for growing hair in those afflicted with androgenetic alopecia-inherited male pattern hair loss. It is not intended to treat hair loss due to other factors. In treating androgenetic alopecia with LLLT, physicians have found that LLLT is most effective in persons with minimal to moderate hair loss. Individual responses to LLLT differ, and results do vary from person to person.

What is the Benefit of a Device that Combines Both Laser and Led Light?

Red light from Laser and LED devices emitting 650-670nm wavelength light can stimulate cells as part of an effective laser hair treatment. The Laser produces a specific wavelength that stimulates the hair follicle cells and also promotes vascular-neogenesis. The LEDs use a broader beam of gentle light energy to cover a wider area of the scalp. Combining the Lasers and LEDs offers the best benefit of both light sources for men with thinning hair.

How does Wavelenght Affect LLLT for Hair Loss Treatment?

it is important to use light within the recommended wavelength for laser hair treatment. Research studies suggest the most effective wavelength for hair rejuvenation is between 650-670-nm. This wavelength has the most efficient and effective absorption that is essential for hair loss therapy.

If 3-4 Time/week has Good Results, will more Frequent Sessions Yield Better Result?

There is no evidence that increased LLLT will provide better results. For maximum benefit and to minimize harm, LLLT should only be used as directed. Each LLLT session should be followed by a period of rest. This translates into alternating session days.

How Long will I need to Continue LLLT Sessions?

Hair loss is a progressive condition. If un-treated, you can expect to lose more and more hair. After the initial 6-month LLLT period, you should continue sessions once or twice per week to continue seeing an improvement in your hair quality.

I just Noticed my Hair is Beginning to Thin - Is it Too Soon to Start LLLT Sessions?

If you have thinning hair, it’s never too soon. In fact, you should begin LLLT as soon as you see signs of thinning hair. LLLT laser hair treatment should be incorporated into your weekly preventative maintenance routine, to preserve and strengthen existing hair and provide a healthy environment for continued growth.

At What Age is it Safe to Start LLLT?

LLLT is effective in people ages 18 and older. Please consult your physician if you are under the age of 18.

Can LLLT be Used After Transplant Surgery?

Yes. LLLT can be used immediately after transplant surgery. Doctors have reported that using LLLT can help stimulate healing of the wounds, and improve transplant results in hair loss patients. In fact, hair transplant surgeons worldwide have chosen to use the LLLT to improve results. Anecdotal reports have shown that LLLT sessions immediately following surgery decrease the recovery time in hair transplant patients, and increases hair thickness. Consult with your transplant surgeon for more information.

After transplant surgery, it is important that your scalp does not come into direct contact with any foreign object. Many devices use teeth or spikes that are studded with a laser. You should not use such devices as they will damage your transplant. Instead, use a device that covers the entire scalp but does not directly touch the scalp.
